Founder Kim Stokely

Adopt-A-Watershed (AAW) was founded in Trinity County, California in 1989 by Kim Stokely, a biologist and K-12 teacher. Over the past 16 years we have worked with communities throughout the United States, refining an array of leadership development strategies and a powerful new instructional method called Place-Based Learning. To date, we have trained more than 20,000 teachers and community leaders, who in turn reach more than 200,000 students each year. Seventy-five percent of those we have assisted over the years are still actively delivering programs in their communities. Our award-winning 18-unit watershed curriculum is currently in use in 31 states, Puerto Rico, Pacific Islands, China, and Uganda. AAW’s largest presence is in California where we currently support 19 Leadership Teams across the state. AAW also has current teams in Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and several Pacific Islands, and alumni teams in 26 states.
